Stay Ready—Expect Every Ball to Come Your Way

One of the most important habits in pickleball is staying in the ready position throughout the rally, even when the ball isn’t coming your way. Especially as beginners, it’s easy to become spectators while our partner exchanges shots with the other team. We relax, lower our paddle, and watch, forgetting that the next ball could come straight at us. At the kitchen line, you’re playing in a very limited space, close to your opponents, with very little time to react. A quick volley, a sudden speed-up, or an unexpected deflection can reach you before you have time to lift your paddle. Never assume that because the last few shots went to your partner, the next one will too. Your opponent might deliberately change direction and target you, or simply mishit the ball and send it somewhere unexpected, including toward your body or face. Keep your knees slightly bent, your body balanced, and your paddle up in front of your upper body, ready to intercept a high ball and protect your face. Letting your paddle hang low leaves you with extra work to do when you may have only a split second to respond. Follow the ball, pay attention to the opponent who is about to hit it, and return to your ready position after every shot. When your partner is playing, stay involved by following the exchange and preparing for whatever comes next. Being ready doesn’t mean being tense or trying to hit every ball yourself; it means staying alert and prepared to respond when it’s your turn. However strange or unlikely a shot may seem, the ball can still come your way. Expect it, keep your paddle ready, and give yourself the best chance to play the next shot and protect yourself.
