Belly Button Target

One of the most common challenges for beginners is getting enough height and depth on their serve. Instead of sailing comfortably over the net and landing deep in the opponent's court, the ball often ends up in the net or drops too short, giving the receiving team an easy opportunity to attack. The good news is that this is often not a strength issue, but a contact-point issue.
A simple drill is to focus on where you drop the ball before the serve. Rather than letting the ball fall beside your body, imagine dropping it directly in front of your belly button. Your belly button should be pointing toward the target area where you want the ball to go. This helps align your body naturally and encourages a straighter swing path.
As the ball drops, make contact in front of your body and swing from low to high. Think about lifting the ball rather than hitting it hard. When your paddle moves upward through the ball, the ball will naturally travel upward as well, giving it a much better chance of clearing the net. Because your body is already facing the target, the ball is also more likely to travel straight instead of drifting off to one side.
This simple adjustment can make a surprising difference. Many players find that by focusing on dropping the ball in front of their belly button and swinging up through contact, their serves become more consistent, deeper, and more reliable. Sometimes the smallest changes produce the biggest improvements.
