The More You Grow, the More You See

One of the fascinating things about pickleball is that the more you develop, the more you begin to see. At first, most of your attention is on the ball in front of you. With experience, you begin to see beyond that ball. If I hit here, where is the next ball likely to come from? Is this the moment to attack, or should I reset and buy time? Should I move forward, or should I give myself more space?
Gradually, individual shots become sequences. A hard drive doesn't necessarily have to win the point; it might push someone back and create the next opportunity. A dink can move someone out of position and open space somewhere else. One shot begins to prepare the next. In doubles, your vision expands even further. You see your partner's position and strengths, what your opponents are trying to do, and which areas of the court are opening and closing.
With more experience, you also begin to think less about winning the point immediately and more about probability. Sometimes the better choice is a reset rather than an attack, another safe ball rather than a difficult winner, or simply creating a situation where the next ball will be easier. That's one of the most interesting things about developing in pickleball: you don't just learn to hit the ball differently. You learn to see the game differently. Next time you play, don't only ask, “How should I hit this ball?” Ask yourself, “What is likely to happen after I hit it?”
