今週は中盤に有意義な2つのピックルボールセッションがありました。まず火曜日の鎌倉体育館では、新しいメンバーや若いメンバーの参加があり、とても良いエネルギーのセッションとなりました。既存メンバーの皆さんが新しい参加者を迎え入れ、サポートし、教えてくれたことにも感謝します。コミュニティが着実に成長していることを感じます。
そして昨日は、松尾コーチと山本コーチにも参加いただき、エネルギーの高いセッションとなりました。
個人的な収穫として特に印象に残ったのが、今回行ったドリルです。4人がキッチンラインに立ち、2つのボールを使ってクロス・ディンクを行います。どちらか一方のボールがネットにかかるかアウトになると、その時点で残ったボールのみでラリーが続き、実戦的な展開になります。このドリルのポイントは、自分にボールが来ていない時でも意識を切らさないことです。パートナーや相手の動きを観察し、常に状況を把握する必要があります。ダブルスではボールが来ていない時に注意が散りやすく、その瞬間に攻撃されることがあります。
また興味深い点として、状況によってはパートナーが有利になると判断した場合に、あえて一つのボールをアウトにするという戦略的な選択もあり得ます。これは判断力やコミュニケーションも求められる良いトレーニングです。ダブルスにおいては、ショットの質だけでなく、常に状況を見続ける意識が重要であることを改めて感じました。
We had two meaningful midweek pickleball sessions this week.On Tuesday at the Kamakura gym, we welcomed new and younger members to the court. The energy was very good, and we thank our existing members for supporting, coaching, and helping the newcomers. It is encouraging to see the community steadily growing. Then yesterday, we had another high-energy session with Coach Matsuo and Coach Yamamoto joining us on court.
One personal takeaway from the session was a very interesting drill we practiced. Four players start at the kitchen line, playing cross-dinking with two balls in play at the same time. Once one of the balls goes into the net or out of play, the rally continues with the remaining ball, turning into a live and competitive exchange.
The key point of this drill is maintaining awareness even when the ball is not coming directly to you. You need to constantly observe your partner and your opponents, staying fully engaged in the situation at all times. In doubles, it is easy to lose focus when you are not directly involved in the rally, which is often when you become vulnerable.
An interesting tactical element is that, in some situations, it may be a deliberate choice to let one ball go out of play if you see that your partner is in a strong attacking position. This adds a layer of decision-making and communication to the drill. It was a useful reminder that in doubles pickleball, it is not only about shot quality, but also about continuously reading the situation and staying aware throughout the rally.
