ホーチミンで感じた、街とピックルボールの熱気A Day of Pickleball and City Life in Ho Chi Minh City

昨日の午後は、ホーチミン市に数多くある教会の一つを訪れ、その近くのカフェにも立ち寄りました。行きはタクシーを使いましたが、帰りはホテルまで30分ほど歩いてみました。交通量は多いものの、想像していたほどではありませんでした。ただ、道路を渡るのはなかなか大変です。とにかく、ある程度の度胸が必要です。横断歩道だからといって、車やバイクが止まってくれると思ってはいけません。基本的には、運転手の目を見て、自分の存在に気づいていることを確認してから渡り、あとは避けてくれることを祈るしかありません。今のところ、歩行者もライダーもお互いにうまく対応しているようで、幸い問題なく渡れています。その後、ベンタイン市場の近くにある路地の奥で、偶然フレンチビストロを見つけました。そこで軽く食事をしました。今朝もかなり早く起きました。午後1時からオープンプレーのセッションがあったので、昼食もかなり早めに取ることにしました。たまたまお気に入りの日本のカレー店を見つけたのですが、店内はかなり混んでいました。あとで分かったのですが、そのセッションは無料だったようで、それが理由だったのかもしれません。なんと40人以上の参加者がいました。あれだけの人数になると、ほとんど「無法地帯」です。今回の経験で、こちらのオープンプレーはかなりカオスになりやすいということを改めて実感しました。私たちOcean Pickleballでは、コミュニティを非常に大切にして運営しています。メンバーのことを把握し、それぞれのレベルも分かっていますし、誰と誰を組み合わせるべきかも考えながら、できるだけ一人ひとりに目を配るようにしています。ですから、今回のようなオープンプレーとはまったく違うアプローチです。施設そのものは素晴らしく、本当にトップクラスでした。ホテルから少し遠く、20分ほどかかりましたが、それだけの価値は十分にありました。明日は今回の旅で最後のフルデーになります。早朝からレッスンを受ける予定なので、とても楽しみにしています。今回ベトナムに来た大きな目的の一つは、こちらのピックルボール事情を実際に見て、現地の状況を理解することでした。いくつかの施設を訪れ、さまざまなプレーヤーと交流し、異なる運営方法を体験することで、ベトナムでピックルボールがどれほど急速に成長しているのか、少しずつ見えてきました。

Yesterday afternoon, I went to visit one of the many churches in Ho Chi Minh City and also checked out a nearby coffee shop. I took a taxi on the way there, but on the way back I decided to walk for about half an hour to the hotel. The traffic is heavy, although perhaps not quite as heavy as I had expected, but crossing the road can certainly be a challenge. You really need to be bold. Do not expect cars or motorbikes to stop at pedestrian crossings. Basically, you have to look at the driver, make sure he sees you, step out and pray that he will avoid you. So far, both riders and drivers seem to have managed the system perfectly well, and thankfully it has worked fine for me. Later, I found a French bistro tucked away in an alley near Ben Thanh Market, so I stopped there for a light meal. This morning, I woke up very early again. I had an open-play session at 1 p.m., so I decided to have a very early lunch. I stumbled across one of my favorite Japanese curry shops, which was absolutely packed. I didn't realize at first that the session was free, which might explain why there were more than 40 people there. With that many players, it was pretty much no-man's-land. The experience confirmed for me that open play here can be quite chaotic. Coming from Ocean Pickleball, we run things very much as a community-focused group. We know all our members, we know their levels, we know who should play with whom, and we really try to take care of our members. So it is a completely different approach. The facility itself was great, absolutely top-notch. It was a little far away, about 20 minutes from my hotel, but certainly worth the trip. Tomorrow is my last full day here, and I have an early-morning lesson, which I am really looking forward to. One of the main reasons I came to Vietnam was to get a better understanding of the local pickleball scene, and after seeing different facilities, different players and different approaches to organizing play, I am getting a much clearer picture of just how quickly the sport is developing here.
