Building a Local Framework for Competition
More people are embracing pickleball, more clubs are forming, and interest in local tournaments is growing. Yet opportunities to play in public venues remain limited. Securing enough courts and time for a tournament, particularly at weekends, is already a challenge.
As the number of tournaments increases, clubs will need to coordinate beyond their own calendars. Bringing clubs together through a local association would provide a practical framework for doing this.
I believe these associations should take responsibility for coordinating local competition: planning tournament calendars, working with local authorities and facility managers to secure venues, and establishing shared principles for safety, entry conditions, and event management. Individual clubs would continue their own activities while contributing to a coordinated local competition programme.
The association itself must operate fairly and transparently. Clubs need a meaningful voice, clear decision-making procedures, transparent finances, and an understandable process for allocating tournament opportunities. It must also build trust with the other sports and residents who share public facilities.
I would like us to bring local clubs together and build this framework, so that growing interest in tournaments is supported by the venues, coordination, and governance needed to sustain them.
