ホーチミン：シルク、バインミー、そして川沿いのピックルボール Ho Chi Minh City: Silk, Bánh Mì and Pickleball by the River

昨日の午後は、ノートルダム大聖堂の近くにあるホーチミン市の中心部まで、コーヒーをいくつか買うために出かけました。ついでに、もう少し街を歩きながら、ホーチミンの雰囲気を味わってきました。

歩いていると、これまで気づかなかったランドマークや、面白い場所が次々と目に入ってきます。古い建築と近代的なビル、そして街全体の活気が混ざり合っていて、歩いているだけでもとても楽しい街です。帰り道、偶然とても素敵なデザイナーズショップを見つけました。地元のデザイナーが経営しているお店で、その方はロンドンでファッションを学んだそうです。とても美しいシルクのドレスを作っていて、見ているうちに、結局我慢できなくなってしまいました。そして、家で待っている「ボス」のために一着購入。旅行中に、予定外の買い物が荷物を増やしていくのは、いつものことです。

その後、まだ少し時間が早かったのですが、たまたま空いているバインミーのお店を見つけました。お客さんは誰もいなかったのですが、こういう時こそ試してみたくなるものです。ローストダックのバインミーと、ライチのアイスティーを注文しました。これが本当に美味しかった。バインミーは香ばしくて味がしっかりしていて、ライチのアイスティーもさっぱりしていて最高でした。

ホテルに戻ったのですが、まだ寝るには少し早かったので、また夜の街を散歩することにしました。ホーチミンは夜になっても街が止まりません。人も多く、通りには活気があり、ただ歩いているだけでも、何か新しいものに出会える感じがします。

今朝はピックルボールのコートへ向かう前に、実はパン屋を探していたのですが、なかなか見つかりませんでした。そんなところで偶然マクドナルドを発見。マクドナルドの朝食が好きな僕としては、これは素通りできず、朝食を食べてから次の目的地へ向かいました。ホテルの近くで、友人とオープンプレーをする予定でした。ところが、実際にコートへ行ってみると、聞いていた話とは違って、なんと大きな大会が開催されていました。ということで予定変更。

友人と一緒に、川沿いにあるとても素敵なクラブへ向かいました。この場所がまた素晴らしくて、ちょっとドバイを思わせる雰囲気でした。近代的で、広々としていて、しかも川沿い。屋根付きのピックルボールコートが3面あり、そこには20人ほどの日本人がいました。みなさん、ホーチミンに住んでいる方たちです。結局、2時間半ほど楽しくプレーしました。まだピックルボールを始めたばかりという方もかなり多かったので、せっかくなので、いつもOcean Pickleballでやっているドリルをいくつか一緒にやってみました。日本でいつもやっているOcean Pickleballのドリルを、ここベトナムでもやることになるとは、なんだか面白いものです。みなさんとても楽しそうで、ピックルボールが場所を越えて人をつないでいくスポーツだということを、改めて感じました。

ただし、問題は暑さです。今日は本当に暑い。すでにTシャツを2回着替えています。そして朝5時半からずっと起きて動き回っているので、さすがに今はかなり疲れてきました。

ということで、午後の予定はいたってシンプル。ホテルに戻って、春巻きを食べて、昼寝です。ホーチミンでの旅は、毎日が忙しく、面白く、そしてとにかく美味しい。そして、この街では、歩いていると必ず次の発見が待っています。もう一つの散歩、もう一つのコート、もう一つのカフェ。そんな「もう一つ」が、いつも角を曲がった先にあるような街です。

Yesterday afternoon, I headed into the center of Ho Chi Minh City, near Notre-Dame Cathedral, to buy a few packs of coffee and get another glimpse of the city. Every time I walk around, I seem to discover another landmark or another interesting corner that I hadn't noticed before. The city has such a fascinating mixture of old architecture, modern buildings, busy streets, and constant energy.

On my way back, I came across a beautiful designer shop run by a local designer who studied fashion in London. She makes these gorgeous silk dresses, and I have to admit, I couldn't really resist. I ended up buying one for the boss back home. Sometimes traveling has unexpected consequences for your luggage.

It was still a little early, but I happened to walk past a bánh mì place that was completely empty, so naturally I had to give it a try. I ordered a roasted duck bánh mì and a lychee iced tea. Both were amazing. The bánh mì was packed with flavor, and the lychee iced tea was exactly what I needed. I went back to the hotel afterwards, but it was still too early to sleep, so I headed out for another night walk. There is something particularly enjoyable about Ho Chi Minh City after dark. The streets are still full of life, people are everywhere, and even a simple walk can turn into another little adventure.

This morning, before heading to the pickleball courts, I was actually looking for a bakery, but I couldn't find one. Instead, I ran into a McDonald's. Being a fan of McDonald's breakfast, I couldn't resist, so I stopped in for breakfast before continuing on. I was supposed to play some open play with a friend near my hotel. We went to the court, only to discover that, unlike what we had been told, there was actually a big tournament taking place there. So we changed our plans and headed to a beautiful club along the river instead. The place immediately reminded me of Dubai: modern, spacious, and beautifully located. They had three covered pickleball courts, and there were around twenty players, all Japanese residents.

It turned into a really fun two-and-a-half-hour session. There were quite a few people who were new to pickleball, so I was lucky enough to run some of our usual Ocean Pickleball drills with them. It was fun to see the same kind of enthusiasm and enjoyment that we have back home in Kamakura being recreated here in Vietnam.

The only problem was the heat. It was unbelievably hot today. I have already changed my shirt for the second time, and I have been up and running since 5:30 this morning, so I am definitely feeling it now. So, for the rest of the afternoon, the plan was simple: stop by the hotel, get some spring rolls, and take a nap. Ho Chi Minh City has been a busy, fascinating, and very tasty experience so far. And somehow, there always seems to be one more walk, one more court, one more café, or one more unexpected discovery waiting around the corner.
