Yesterday's session lasted three hours in a hot, non-air-conditioned school gym. It certainly didn't feel short while we were playing, but the time-lapse makes it look like it was over in the blink of an eye.
Today’s takeaway is an important doubles concept: the center line isn't a wall. Many recreational players divide the court into two strict halves and become reluctant to cross the center line because they think anything on their partner's side is off limits. In reality, when your partner is pulled wide, pushed deep, or caught out of position, that open space becomes the team's responsibility. Sometimes the best play is to step across the center line and cover it before your opponents can take advantage.
That doesn't mean chasing every ball or getting in your partner's way. It means communicating, reading the situation, and moving as a team. Instead of thinking, "I'll defend my half," try thinking, "We'll defend the whole court together." That small shift in mindset can make a remarkable difference to your court coverage—and your success as a doubles team.
