攻める前に、まずはニュートラルへ

上級者と中級者の違いは、強打が打てるかどうかではありません。本当の違いは、「状況判断」にあります。

中級者によく見られるのが、劣勢のラリーで無理にウィナーを狙ってしまうことです。

例えばクロスコートのディンクラリーで、相手に鋭いディンクを打たれ、体勢を崩してバックフットになったとします。その状況で一発逆転を狙って強打してしまうと、多くの場合はネットやアウトになってしまいます。

上級者は違います。彼らはラリーには「優勢」「ニュートラル」「劣勢」という流れがあることを理解しています。劣勢になったら、最初にやるべきことはポイントを決めることではありません。まずはラリーをニュートラルな状態に戻すことです。

柔らかいリセットショットやセンターへのディンクで時間を作り、体勢を立て直し、キッチンラインで良いポジションを取り戻します。そして、そこから初めて攻撃のチャンスを探します。

多くのプレーヤーは、この「ニュートラルに戻す」というステップを飛ばしてしまいます。だからこそ、不要なミスが増えてしまうのです。

次に相手に押し込まれたときは、無理にスーパープレーを狙わないでください。まずは落ち着いてラリーを立て直し、チャンスが来るまで我慢すること。それが、ワンランク上のプレーヤーへの第一歩です。

A mistake I see over and over again is players trying to win a rally when they're already losing it.

Imagine you're in a cross-court dink exchange. Your opponent hits a sharp, aggressive dink that pushes you off balance and onto your back foot. Instead of accepting that you're under pressure, you try to pull off a spectacular winner. It might work once in a while, but far more often the ball ends up in the net or flies long.

The best players think differently. They understand that every rally has phases. Sometimes you're in control, sometimes you're under pressure, and sometimes the rally is neutral. When you're on the defensive, your first objective is not to win the point. It's to get back to neutral.

A well-placed reset or a soft dink to the middle can buy you enough time to recover your position, regain balance, and turn an unfavorable situation into an even one. Only then do you start looking for an opportunity to attack.

Too many players try to skip the neutral phase. They go straight from defense to offense, and that's where unnecessary errors happen.

The next time you find yourself stretched wide or off balance, resist the temptation to hit the highlight-reel winner. Stay patient, play the high-percentage shot, recover your position, and trust that another opportunity to attack will come.

In pickleball, winning isn't usually about hitting more spectacular shots. It's about making fewer bad decisions.
