黄色いプラスチックのボールを追いかけることに、何の害もありません。忙しい毎日の中で、ピックルボールは体を動かし、人とつながる時間をくれます。同時に、それは長い「自己発見の旅」でもあります。自分の体の動き、自然や環境がプレーに与える影響、対戦相手との関わり方を学びながら、少しずつ自分を知っていく。特にアマチュアレベルでは、点を取ることが目的ではなく、その過程を楽しみ、学び、動きの中にバランスを見つけることが大切だと思います。この本の一つのテーマは「禅」です。もっと正確に言えば、「禅的なものの見方」です。宗教としての禅を広めることが目的ではなく、物事を観察し、考え、バランスを見いだす一つの姿勢を示しています。1970年代に欧米で広まり、『禅とオートバイ修理技術』という名作を生みましたが、ここで語られる禅は信仰ではなく、思考の枠組みのことです。さらに、規律と同情についての本でもあります。僧が修行中の弟子を棒で軽く叩くのは、怒りではなく気づきを促すためなのです。また、この本では異なる文化の対話の大切さにも触れています。今の時代にこそ、そうした対話が何より求められていると感じます。人が集まるとき、二つのタイプのコミュニティが生まれます。文化や創造性を育むタイプと、もう一つは敵を作り、否定によって団結しようとするタイプです。私たちは前者を選びたいと思います。常に学び、そして喜びの中で成長するコミュニティを。この旅の半年を経て、その思いを共有したいと思いました。

There is no harm in chasing a yellow plastic ball. In our busy daily lives, pickleball gives us time to move our bodies and to connect with people. At the same time, it is a long “journey of self-discovery.” While learning about how our bodies move, how nature and the environment affect play, and how we relate to our opponents, we come to know ourselves little by little. Especially at the amateur level, the aim is not to score points, but to enjoy the process, to learn, and to find balance in movement. One of the themes of this book is “Zen.” More precisely, it is a “Zen-like way of seeing.” The purpose is not to spread Zen as a religion; it presents an attitude of observing, thinking, and finding balance. In the 1970s it spread in the West and produced the classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, but the Zen spoken of here is not faith; it is a framework for thinking. It is also a book about discipline and compassion. When a monk lightly taps a student with a stick during training, it is not out of anger but to prompt awareness. The book also touches on the importance of dialogue among different cultures. I feel that such dialogue is needed now more than ever.When people gather, two types of communities are born. One is a type that gathers to nurture culture and creativity; the other tries to unite by creating enemies and through negation. We would like to choose the former. A community that is always learning and growing in joy. Six months into this journey, I wanted to share that feeling.
