To Improve Your Game, Start by Learning How to Watch

To Improve Your Game, Start by Learning How to Watch
Lessons, drills and videos are all important for improving at pickleball. But whenever you have the opportunity to watch a good player or coach from just a few metres away, make the most of it. There are things you can see at close range that are difficult to notice on a screen.
The important thing is not simply to watch the game, but to watch the person. Don't get carried away by the rally. Look at where they stand, how their feet move, where they hold the paddle and how they prepare for the next shot. With dinking in particular, watch the foot position, balance, paddle angle and compact movement.
Of course, you shouldn't simply copy another player. We have different bodies, and professionals and coaches also have individual styles. But when you observe enough good players, you begin to recognize what they have in common: balance, positioning, preparation and efficient movement.
Then compare what you see with yourself. Is your swing bigger? Is your paddle lower? Are they moving their feet where you tend to reach for the ball? Videos are excellent learning tools, but there is a different value in watching a very good player from close range. Observe carefully, compare it with your own game, and then try it yourself.
