The 30-60-90 is a drill designed to practice how to defend from the baseline when your opponent is already established at the kitchen line, and how to gradually work your way forward. The player at the kitchen line feeds the ball, and the player at the baseline starts with a drop shot hit at around 30% power, landing in the kitchen. The next ball is a hybrid shot at around 60% power, somewhere between a drop and a drive. The third ball is a forehand or backhand drive at around 90% power. The sequence then starts again: 30%, 60%, 90%. The purpose is not simply to practice three different shots. It is also to watch what happens at the other end of the court and understand which type of ball is easier or more difficult for the player at the kitchen line to handle. A harder shot is not necessarily a better shot. When your opponent is already established at the kitchen, a fast drive can sometimes be relatively easy to volley, allowing them to use your pace against you. A controlled drop or hybrid, on the other hand, can force the opponent to contact the ball lower and make it much more difficult for them to attack.

By comparing the 30%, 60% and 90% shots, you start to understand how changes in pace, height and depth affect your opponent. Instead of simply trying to hit harder, the objective becomes creating a ball that is difficult to attack and gives you the opportunity to move from the baseline through the transition zone and eventually establish yourself at the kitchen line.

A simple drill that works on shot selection, control, defense and the transition from the baseline to the kitchen.
