Trying to beat a younger player purely on reaction speed can be difficult. But what if you could start gathering information before the ball even leaves their paddle?

Instead of watching only the ball, pay attention to your opponent’s preparation.

The angle of the paddle face, the position of their feet, the way the shoulder loads and the size of the backswing can all provide clues about what is coming next. A hard drive often looks different before contact from a soft dink or reset.

You won’t suddenly predict every shot, and it takes deliberate practice because our natural instinct is to follow the ball. But watch the players you face regularly and you may begin to notice patterns in the way they prepare for different shots.

During your next session, try dedicating one game to paying particular attention to the opponent’s paddle just before contact. Even a fraction of a second of anticipation can turn a desperate lunge into a comfortable response. If you can’t react faster, learn to anticipate earlier. Experience can be a weapon too.
