When people think about pickleball, they often imagine long, exciting rallies filled with spectacular winners. In reality, however, many points are effectively decided long before that. More often than not, the first five shots of a rally determine who takes control and who is forced onto the defensive.

The serve, the return, the third shot, and the next two exchanges form the foundation of every point. Executing these shots well gives you the best chance of dictating the rally instead of reacting to it.

It all starts with a deep serve and a deep return. Pushing your opponents behind the baseline gives you more time to prepare and makes it much harder for them to attack.

The third shot is often the most important. Rather than trying to hit a spectacular winner, focus on hitting a controlled, consistent shot that stays low. Whether you choose a drive or a drop, your objective should be to make your opponents hit upward and prevent them from attacking.

Good footwork is just as important as good shot selection. After hitting a drive from the baseline, many players immediately rush toward the kitchen line. The better approach is often to stop, regain your balance, and prepare for the next shot before continuing forward. A balanced player reacts more quickly and makes far fewer mistakes.

At the net, avoid reaching for the ball whenever possible. Instead, use your feet to move into the correct position. Reaching usually results in a popped-up volley that gives your opponents an easy opportunity to attack.

Another habit that separates stronger players is the split-step. Making a small split-step just as your opponent strikes the ball keeps you balanced and ready to move in any direction, allowing you to handle both hard drives and soft drops with greater control.

Pickleball is not a game won by the hardest hitters. It is won by players who consistently execute the fundamentals, maintain good court position, and make smart decisions under pressure.

The next time you step onto the court, don't think about winning the entire rally. Instead, concentrate on winning the first five shots. You'll be surprised how often the rest of the point falls into place.
