ピックルボールと都市空間、その先にあるもの Pickleball, Urban Space, and What Comes Next

本日、銀座の「PICKLEBALL ONE」で、起業家の熊倉周作さんとお会いする機会があった。地下に広がるこの空間は、一見するとシンプルなインドアコートのようでありながら、実際にはそれ以上のものを感じさせる。都心の限られたスペースの中で、プレー、プロショップ、そして人が自然に集まる導線がうまく設計されている。壁一面に並ぶパドルは単なるディスプレイではなく、その場で試し、選び、購入することができる。プレーと道具、そして体験が一体となった空間だ。

また、コート利用にとどまらず、初心者向けのセッションやオープンプレイなども用意されており、レベルや背景の異なる人たちが自然に交わる設計になっている点も印象的だった。こうした都市型の施設は、日本におけるピックルボールの広がり方に一つのヒントを与えているように思う。正直に言えば、これは単なる施設ではなく、一つの方向性の提示だと感じた。そして、おそらくこれはまだ始まりに過ぎない。

Earlier today, I had the chance to meet entrepreneur Shusaku Kumakura at Pickleball One in Ginza.At first glance, the space feels like a straightforward indoor facility, but it quickly becomes clear that there is more going on. Within a constrained urban footprint, the layout integrates play, retail, and community in a very deliberate way.One of the most striking features is the wall of paddles. It’s not just a display — players can try them, compare them, and purchase them on the spot. The experience of playing and the tools of the game are seamlessly connected.

Beyond court usage, the facility offers beginner sessions and open play, creating a natural flow where people of different levels and backgrounds interact without friction.Spaces like this may offer a glimpse into how pickleball could evolve in Japan — not as a standalone sport, but as part of a broader urban lifestyle. To be honest, this feels less like a facility and more like a statement of direction.And most likely, this is only the beginning.
