スポーツが人をつなぐということ――ピンポン外交からピックルボールへWhen sport connects people—from Ping-Pong Diplomacy to Pickleball

1970年代初頭、冷え切っていた米中関係の中で、ひとつの小さなスポーツが大きな役割を果たしました。いわゆる「ピンポン外交」です。卓球という、誰にでもできるシンプルな競技が、国家間の対話のきっかけとなり、人と人との距離を縮めました。

この出来事は、映画『フォレスト・ガンプ』の中でも印象的に描かれています。主人公のフォレストが、特別な意図や政治的な計算を持つことなく、ただ卓球を楽しみ、気づけばその流れの中に身を置いている。あのシーンは、スポーツが本来持っている「純粋に人をつなぐ力」を象徴しているように感じます。

ピックルボールも、まさにそうしたスポーツだと思います。年齢や経験、バックグラウンドに関係なく、同じコートに立てば自然と会話が生まれ、笑顔が増えていく。競技でありながら、まず人と人が向き合うところから始まる。その点で、卓球ととても近い存在だと感じています。

先週行われた三つのクラブによる合同トーナメントも、私たちにとっては単なる試合以上の意味を持つものでした。普段はそれぞれの場所で活動している人たちが集まり、同じルールのもとでプレーし、言葉を交わし、時間を共有する。そこには勝敗以上に、「つながること」そのものの価値がありました。

こうした場が自然に生まれ、継続していくためには、見えにくいところで多くの準備や調整、そして責任が伴います。コートの確保や連絡のやり取り、参加者への配慮。それらは表に出ることは少ないですが、皆が気持ちよく集まるための大切な土台です。

OPCでは、ピックルボールを「その日だけ楽しむもの」として終わらせるのではなく、鎌倉で長く、健全に続いていく文化として根付かせたいと考えています。そのために必要なのは、技術やレベル以上に、相手を尊重し、全体のことを考え、必要なときにはきちんと考えを言葉にして伝える姿勢だと思っています。

運営する側だけが頑張るのではなく、関わる一人ひとりが少しずつ意識を共有することで、コミュニティは育っていきます。スポーツが人をつなぎ、そのつながりが次の場を生む。その循環を大切にしながら、これからもピックルボールの楽しさと、人へのリスペクトの両方を大切にしていきたいと思います。

In the early 1970s, at a time when relations between the Japan/United States and China were frozen, a small and simple sport played an unexpectedly significant role. This moment became known as “ping-pong diplomacy.” Table tennis, accessible to anyone, helped open a path for dialogue and brought people closer across national boundaries.

This episode is memorably portrayed in the film Forrest Gump, where the main character plays table tennis with no political intention or strategy, simply enjoying the game. Almost without realizing it, he becomes part of a larger historical moment. That scene captures something essential about sport: its natural ability to connect people.

Pickleball shares that same quality. Regardless of age, experience, or background, once people step onto the same court, conversations begin and smiles appear. While it is a competitive sport, it starts first and foremost as a face-to-face human interaction. In that sense, it feels very close to table tennis.

The three-club joint tournament held last week carried a similar meaning for us. Players who usually practice in different places came together, played under the same rules, exchanged words, and shared time on and off the court. Beyond wins and losses, what stood out was the value of connection itself.

For these kinds of moments to happen naturally and continue over time, a great deal of preparation, coordination, and responsibility is required behind the scenes. Securing courts, managing communication, and being mindful of participants are not always visible, but they form the foundation that allows everyone to gather comfortably.

At OPC, we do not see pickleball as something to be enjoyed only for a day. Our goal is to help it take root in Kamakura as a sustainable and healthy community over the long term. To do so, what matters most is not just skill or level, but an attitude of respect for others, consideration for the group as a whole, and the willingness to communicate thoughtfully when needed.

A community grows not only through the efforts of those who organize it, but through the shared awareness of everyone involved. Sport connects people, those connections create new opportunities, and that cycle allows the community to move forward. With that in mind, we hope to continue valuing both the joy of pickleball and the respect we show to one another.
