Play Smarter #4: Placement Over Power

Hitting a serve or return hard can feel great. But against a fast opponent with good reactions, raw power alone may not give you much of an advantage.
Instead of asking how hard you can hit the ball, think about where you want it to land.
On the serve, depth and placement can create more problems than speed. A deep serve toward the backhand can push your opponent behind the baseline and force them to return from a less comfortable position.
The same principle applies to the return. A deep, controlled return keeps the serving team back and gives you valuable time to move forward and establish yourself at the kitchen.
Placement does require practice. Try spending ten minutes before your next few sessions serving to specific targets: deep to the backhand, deep through the middle, or toward a corner. Build a serve you can reproduce under pressure.
A spectacular serve that lands two times out of five is not necessarily a weapon. A controlled serve that repeatedly puts your opponent exactly where you want them can be. Power is useful. Control is often more useful.
