【Use Their Power: A Blocking Drill for Handling Bangers】

Players who hit hard ball after ball—often called “bangers”—can feel intimidating. But you don’t need to match their power. With a compact block, you can use their pace to send back an effective shot.
For this drill, place two players at the baseline and two at the kitchen line, each working with the player directly opposite them. The baseline players feed firm drives, while the kitchen players return them with backhand block volleys. Start at a manageable pace and gradually increase the speed as control improves. Keep feeds away from the face; protective eyewear is recommended.
Keep your paddle up in front of your body, slightly favouring the backhand position. Rather than taking a backswing, hold the paddle face steady and use a small forward movement to meet the ball. Let the incoming pace do the work, directing your return towards the baseline player’s feet.
For this drill, avoid trying to drop the ball short or taking a big swing. Extra movement makes it harder to time the contact and can lead to a miss or a floating return into the middle of the court.
Handling power starts with preparation and a stable paddle face. Once you get comfortable with a compact block, fast balls become much less intimidating.
