ミックスダブルスは、ピックルボールの中でも特にチームワークとコミュニケーションが大切な種目です。初心者の方は、「ダブルスは50対50でプレーするもの」と考えがちですが、実際には多くのチームで自然と役割分担が生まれてきます。
伝統的なミックスダブルスでは、男性プレーヤーが左側に入ることが一般的です。その理由は戦術的なものです。右利き同士のペアでは、左側のプレーヤーはフォアハンドで中央をカバーしやすく、中央のボールを攻撃したり、積極的にプレッシャーをかけたりしやすくなります。そのため、左側のプレーヤーがより攻撃的な役割を担うことが多くなります。
ただし、初心者にとっては、「より強いプレーヤー、または自信のあるプレーヤーが左側に入る」と考えると分かりやすいでしょう。そのほうが中央のボールをカバーしやすくなり、プレー中の混乱も減ります。
もちろん、右側のプレーヤーも非常に重要です。難しいボールを返したり、安定したプレーを続けたり、相手に攻撃されてもラリーを立て直したりすることで、チーム全体を支えます。強いミックスダブルスのチームとは、一人がすべてをするチームではなく、お互いの役割を理解しながら協力してプレーできるチームです。
初心者にとって最も大切なのは、難しい戦術を考えすぎることではありません。しっかりコミュニケーションを取り、一緒に動き、中央のボールを誰が取るかをはっきり決めることが、良いダブルスへの第一歩になります。
Mixed doubles is one of the most enjoyable parts of pickleball because it is all about teamwork and communication. Many beginners think doubles should always be played “50-50,” with both players covering exactly the same amount of court, but in reality most teams naturally develop different roles.
In traditional mixed doubles, the man is usually positioned on the left side of the court. The reason is mainly tactical. In a right-handed team, the left-side player has their forehand covering the middle, making it easier to attack balls, take middle shots, and put pressure on opponents. Because of this, the left-side player often becomes the more aggressive player during rallies.
For beginners, however, a simpler way to think about it is that the stronger or more confident player will often play on the left side. This can help the team cover the middle more effectively and reduce confusion during points.
The player on the right side plays an equally important role by keeping the team steady, defending difficult shots, and helping create opportunities for attacks. Strong mixed doubles teams are not about one player doing everything. They are about two players understanding their roles and working together effectively.
For beginners, the most important thing is not to worry too much about complicated strategy. Good communication, moving together as a team, and deciding clearly who takes the middle balls will make a huge difference. As players improve, their roles usually become more natural over time.
