The Importance of the Kitchen Line

One of the biggest habits holding recreational pickleball players back is giving up the kitchen line by waiting for every dink to bounce. It feels comfortable and safe, but it's actually putting you on the defensive. Every time you step back, you give your opponents more time to react, create more space for them to work with, and leave your feet exposed to the next shot.

The better habit is to look for opportunities to take the ball out of the air. A well-executed volley dink takes precious time away from your opponents, keeps you in control of the kitchen line, and allows you to apply pressure instead of absorbing it. Of course, this doesn't mean volleying every ball—good judgment is still essential—but too many players automatically retreat instead of looking for chances to stay on the offensive.

The next time you're drilling, make a conscious effort to lean forward, stay balanced, and look for those balls you can comfortably volley. It may feel unfamiliar at first, but with practice you'll find yourself controlling more rallies instead of reacting to them. Sometimes the biggest improvements don't come from learning a new shot—they come from changing a simple habit.
